Holi is almost here. The streets will turn pink, yellow, and green. Children will run with water balloons. Plates will be full of gujiya and fried snacks. Music will play loudly in every para. It is one of the happiest festivals we celebrate.
But let us be honest. After all the fun, many people end up with itchy skin, red rashes, dry hair, burning eyes, acidity, and tiredness. The colors today are often chemical-based. The weather around this time is changing. The body is already adjusting from winter to summer. According to Ayurveda, this seasonal shift can increase heat and sensitivity in the body. That is why taking care of your skin and health during Holi is not extra. It is necessary.
Here are simple Ayurvedic tips that actually work and are easy to follow at home.
Before You Step Out to Play
The biggest mistake people make is playing Holi on dry skin and dry hair. This makes the colors stick more and go deeper into the pores.
On the morning of Holi, apply a generous amount of coconut oil or sesame oil on your face, neck, arms, and legs. Do not apply just a few drops. Massage it properly so that a thin protective layer forms on the skin. Oil acts like a shield. It prevents colours from entering deep into the skin and reduces dryness later.
For hair, oiling is even more important. Apply warm coconut oil from roots to ends and tie your hair properly. If possible, cover it with a scarf or cap. This simple step can save you from rough, frizzy hair and hair fall after Holi.
Also, trim your nails short and apply a little oil around the cuticles. Colors usually get stuck there and are difficult to remove.
Food also matters before you go out. Do not play Holi on an empty stomach. Eat light but nourishing food like rice, dal, vegetables, or poha. Drink enough water. When the body is hydrated, the skin naturally handles dryness better.
While Playing Holi
Try to use herbal or natural colors as much as possible. Many local stores now sell safer options. Even if everyone is not using them, you can at least choose for yourself and your family.
Avoid excessive use of water on the face. The combination of harsh colors and water balloons can damage the skin barrier. If someone applies color forcefully, do not rub it immediately. Rubbing spreads it more and irritates the skin.
If you feel burning in the eyes, wash gently with clean water. Do not use soap near the eyes. Protect your lips with a little ghee or lip balm before stepping out.
Remember that Holi is about joy, not proving who can apply more color. Play mindfully. Protecting your body is not boring. It is being sensible.
After Holi Care
This is where most damage happens. People try to scrub off colors aggressively with strong soaps and face washes. That only makes things worse.
First, rinse your body with normal water. Let most of the loose color wash away. Then use a mild cleanser. Instead of harsh scrubs, you can apply a simple homemade ubtan made with besan and milk or curd. Gently massage and wash off. It helps remove color without damaging the skin.
For hair, apply a mild shampoo. Do not shampoo repeatedly on the same day. After washing, apply a little aloe vera gel or light oil to restore moisture.
If the skin feels irritated, apply fresh aloe vera gel or a light layer of coconut oil at night. This calms redness and dryness.
Supporting the Body from Inside
Holi is not only about colors. It is also about sweets, fried food, and cold drinks. Too much heavy food can disturb digestion. Ayurveda always focuses on balance.
The next day, keep your meals light. Simple khichdi, vegetables, and warm water with a few drops of lemon can help the body recover. Herbal teas made with tulsi or ginger are also helpful in improving digestion.
Sleep properly after Holi. Late-night celebrations are fine once in a while, but the body needs rest to repair itself. When you sleep well, the skin also heals faster.
When to Consult an Ayurvedic Doctor
If you notice severe rashes, continuous itching, hair fall, or allergic reactions, do not ignore them. Every person has a different body type. What works for one may not work for another. An Ayurvedic consultation can help you understand your body constitution and suggest proper treatment.
Holi comes once a year. It should leave you with happy memories, not skin problems and weakness. With a little planning and simple Ayurvedic care, you can protect your skin and body without missing out on the fun.
Celebrate fully. Laugh loudly. Enjoy the colors. Just make sure you return home with healthy skin, strong hair, and a balanced body. That is the real win this Holi.
